I love speed. I have a need for speed on a daily basis and the faster it goes, the better life feels. Hence, naturally, I have had an attraction to two wheeled wonders with a lot of torque and horsepower to satisfy this thirst. But just recently I discovered why the entire industry of two-wheeled speed monsters is bad - awfully bad - for nature and our love to animals.
This insight goes beyond motorcycles of course. The entire auto industry is involved. And apparel. Accessories. It is everywhere. LEATHER.
Many car owners can actually be totally leather free as only the high-end cars have leather seats. There is somehow an easy choice. But for a motorcyclist, leather is everywhere - Shoes, gloves, jackets, pants and even bags, leather is unavoidably prevalent. Yes, there is a choice. There are textile products for most but the protection isn't even close to what leather can achieve. The alternative is to go with carbon protection and outer textile shell. So it is possible, but my point is that I have never before thought of it in this way - that leather is animal hides, depending on the seeding, feeding, growing and slaughtering animals in the billions to provide for an industry "worth" hundreds and hundreds of billion US dollars. It is one of the worlds largest traded commodities, and probably THE largest considering it is ONLY a fashion item - We survive perfectly without it!
Many of us have seen the movie "Silence of the Lambs" where the antagonist villain makes a dress out of human female skin. The immediate reaction for most of us, wants to express a person in absolute disgust; a man perverted and degenerated to a level, society far and long ago have abandoned. Only in absence of love, light and kindness can such a person thrive. Yet, we humans do the exact same thing, thousands and thousand times a day without remorse, reflection or feel morally degraded a single second.
So, imagine the woman with her baby, securing her son in the backseat of her new BMW 530 estate wagon with four wheel drive - because safety first - straight onto the surface created out of 2-3 grown, fed and slaughtered cows, which if there were a camera following the process, would be akin to a horror show in 120fps slow motion stuck to your iris - and this baby will never know what horrors has gone through to create the seat for him and the amount of blood, pain and agony other living souls on this planet has gone through.
Where did it go so wrong?
Do I overstate it? I think not. I have been living 43 years without caring much about it either. Until now. Which says a lot considering that I view myself as an educated and morally sound man. I'm truly not. But I can be a part of a change. I will no longer pursuit my interest for cars or motorcycles. I will no longer buy any clothing or accessories with leather. Now, I don't buy much anyways, but this is a future promise. I'm further not going to exploit the interest by wearing any leather, as to "normalize" kids into believing it is ok. It is truly wrong. No lover of nature or animal with this insigt could ever support the leather, meat or diary industry.
Our need to cooperate in nature is larger now than ever before. Nature is on the brink of a collapse on a grander scale than continents cover and WILL reset itself by any means necessary, if pushed further. I think it is too late for human change, we are beyond that. Because we simply have showed that we don't have the capacity of understanding to provide the changes necessary and to appreciate our responsibility for our planet as we ought to. Nature will fight back, and it has already started and we humans will once again be taught that nature is our only home and we must love it the same way as nature love us, to thrive for generations to come.
Love everything around you, because you are everything around it.
